John R. Summers was born in Irvine, Kentucky, and grew up in Louisville as a third-generation railroad employee. He began his railroad career with the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company in the Engineering Department and retired as engineer of public projects for CSX in Jacksonville, Florida. His fascination with railroads led him to compile this large collection, dating from 1862 to 1994, which includes his memoirs and some family history.
